We express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the recent announcement of significant reductions to the 9 Cambridge <> Littleport bus service, scheduled to take effect from 14 April. The proposed changes, which involve cutting the service frequency and the number of stops, will undoubtedly have a severe impact on the daily lives of many residents in the region.
The current hourly service, operating from early morning to late evening in both directions, serves as a vital transportation link for numerous individuals who rely on public transportation to commute to work, access essential services, and maintain their daily routines. The proposed reduction to only 3 buses from late morning to afternoon in the Littleport direction, and very early morning, afternoon, and late evening in the Cambridge direction, coupled with a significant decrease in stops, will render commuting impossible for a considerable number of people, especially those residing far from train stations or will force them to use personal transport increasing carbon footprint and damaging the environment.
As concerned members of the community, we are joining many others in urging the local authorities to reconsider and reverse these changes. The potential impact on the accessibility and mobility of residents cannot be overstated, and we believe that preserving the existing service is crucial for the well-being and convenience of the community.
We kindly request the City Council write to and engage with the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) regarding the proposed reductions to the 9 Cambridge <> Littleport bus service. In particular, we would like to emphasize the importance of retaining key stops such as Westbrook Centre (West Chesterton, North Cambridge) and Stretham Church (Stretham village) and times such as 6:35 onwards from Cambridge and 15:45 onwards from Littleport. These play a crucial role in facilitating the daily routines of many residents and should be preserved to maintain the functionality and reliability of the bus service.
We understand that Stagecoach has suggested that individuals voice their concerns through petitions, as many in the community were shocked by this news. Please consider this petition as such, representing not only our concerns but also those of numerous community members who rely on the 9 Cambridge <> Littleport bus service.
We appreciate your attention to this matter and trust that you will take the necessary steps to ensure the continued accessibility and convenience of public transportation for all residents in the region.
