Background Information: Air pollution is the UK’s largest environmental risk to public health. Everyone has a right to breathe clean air, especially the poorest and most vulnerable, whose health is disproportionately impacted. But, local authorities can only do so much within the legislative and funding framework set by Government. Oxford City Council is calling on other councils to sign A new 'Cleaner Air Charter'. Launched it in August, so far, Southampton and Brighton and Hove City Councils have signed up to the Charter. It is the first formal cooperation between Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, and local authorities. The Charter challenges government to tackle the issue of air pollution, by providing greater investment in public transport, tightening legal limits and improving national monitoring. It calls on the Environment Secretary to demonstrate leadership by removing the most polluting vehicles from town and cities and launching a public health campaign to highlight the dangers of air pollution.
