The Committee received a report from the Operations Manager (Community Engagement and Enforcement) regarding environmental data which provided an overview of City Council Refuse and Environment and Streets and Open Spaces service activity relating to the geographical area served by the West/Central Area Committee.

Comments from members of the public

     i.        Asked if there was a possibility of having the paths swept on Midsummer Common and Coe Fen after the cattle had been taken away.

ii.        Enquired if Street Rangers be advised to take down out of date notices.

iii.        Asked what is being done to deal with the large oversized posters which are being put up by the public on public railings?

iv.        Thanked the Council for installing two additional bins in Kings Street but was surprised that the takeaways proprietors did not have to supply their own bins outside their premises.

Comments from the Committee

     i.        Highlight how effective the cleaning of the runnels had been and would like to keep the project running.

ii.        Asked what was the partnership working with the University for events such as the May Ball, and if the Council worked with the May Ball committees

iii.        Queried what lessons had been learnt from the ward blitzes, particularly in Market ward.

iv.        Raised issues with the recycling centres in Market Ward particularly Adam and Eve Street.

   v.        There was still an issue with pink bags not being collected and left out for a days at a time.

In response to the Comments the Operations Manager (Community Engagement and Enforcement) made the following:

     i.        Could answer the query regarding the cattle but would take the question away and speak with relevant Officers.

ii.        Fly tipping at the recycling centre in Adam and Eve Street had become a problem and the matter needed to be looked at in further detail.

iii.        Highlighted areas in Market Ward and focused on certain areas, such as the City Rangers looking at bike rakes.  Ward blitzes are analysed and looked at what areas could be improved upon.

iv.        Confirmed that the City Rangers would be instructed to take out any out of date signage.

   v.        If a poster had been put up to advertise a not for commercial profit planning permission was not required but permission was needed from the landowner.

vi.        Those banners which had not been authorised to put up were removed.

vii.        Not aware of any practices that the City Council undertook with regards to the May Ball but would speak with the relevant Officers and report back to the Committee.

viii.        Aware of the problem with the pink bags and would speak with the Operations Manager on this matter.

ix.        New legislation allowed the Council to service a notice to those individuals causing harm to the environment, so could make the proprietor of the takeaway put in a bin.
